Fundamentals of Communication Passives
Feb 07, 2018

(A) Overview of communication passive components

Passive devices are divided into linear devices and non-linear devices. Linear passive devices are reciprocal and non reciprocal.

Linear reciprocal components only microwave signal linear transformation without changing the frequency characteristics, and to meet the reciprocity principle. Often we refer to passive components as linear reciprocal components.

(B) power splitter

Power splitter is a device that splits the energy of one output signal into two or more outputs. Essentially an impedance converter.

Is it possible to reverse the power splitter to replace the combiner?

When used as a synthesizer, not only high isolation, low VSWR, but also more emphasis on the requirements to withstand high power. Taking into account the commonly used cavity power splitter output port does not match, a large standing wave; microstrip splitter inversely bear the characteristics of low power, we do not recommend the use of power splitter instead to replace the combiner.

Cavity power splitter features

Power divider cavity, the use of high-quality alloy as a conductor, the filling medium is air;

Can withstand relatively large power, up to 200W; and dielectric loss, conductor loss is basically negligible, insertion loss, can be less than 0.1dB.

However, because there is no isolation resistance, the output port isolation is very small, so the cavity power divider can not be used as a power synthesizer.

(C) coupler

Coupler is a kind of input signal energy through the electric field, the magnetic field coupled to part of the coupling end of the output, the remaining part of the output of the output to complete the power distribution components.

The coupler power distribution is unequal. Also known as power sampler.

Coupler classification

Directional coupler

Directional couplers are commonly used to sample specified directional microwave signals. The main purpose is to separate and isolate the signals, or to mix different signals on the contrary. In the absence of an internal load, the directional couplers are often a four-port network.

Directional couplers are often implemented in two ways

Cavity coupler

Features: Bearing high power, low loss performance.

the reason:

1, cavity filling medium is air, in the transmission process, due to the media caused by air media dissipation is much lower. The company is located in:

2, the coupling line with generally good conductivity of the conductor (such as copper surface silver) is made, the conductor loss is basically negligible.

3, the cavity size, fast cooling. Withstand high power.

Hybrid Combiner

The concept of a hybrid combiner: Comparison method to measure various quantities (such as resistance, capacitance, inductance, etc.) of the instrument. The simplest is a circuit of four branches. Each branch is called the "arm" of the hybrid combiner. Figure circuit has a resistance unknown (R2), a diagonal connected to the DC power supply U, the other diagonal access galvanometer G. The hybrid combiner can be balanced by adjusting the value of each known resistor to pass no current in G.
