Introduction of high power amplifier

The role of a high power amplifier (HPA) is to make the carrier of the earth station reach a specified EIRP value. HPA is usually equipped with 1: 1 or 1: n standby. The main spare equipment must be replaced automatically.

Comparison of high power amplifier

There are three types of HPA in common use: the klystron amplifier (KLYA), the traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA) and the field effect transistor amplifier (SSPA).

Each of the three has its own characteristics and needs to be selected according to the actual situation. Table 1 shows the comparison of the main features of the three classes of amplifiers. From table 1, we can see that the bandwidth of TWTA and SSPA can be covered by the whole transmitting band, and it can amplify multiple carriers at the same time, which is suitable for the multi carrier business that needs to change the transponder from time to time. SSPA is suitable for occasions with fewer carrier numbers. But in the amplification of multiple carriers, in order to control the intermodulation products within the specified value, the amplifier should operate in the linear region (no saturation), the output power is not enough, need to have a certain amount of compensation (i.e. input level backward), the amount of compensation as the carrier number and decide, general in 4 ~ 7dB. Therefore, when multiple carriers need to be amplified, a larger TWTA of rated power should be selected.

KLYA amplifier has the advantages of low price, high efficiency and convenient maintenance, but its working frequency band is narrow. It is only suitable for a certain transponder. When replacing the transponder, it is not very convenient to re tune the resonant cavity of the klystron. With the progress of technology, there are now automatic tuning and wide band (80MHz) products. This product partially compensates for the defects of early products, and makes the application scope of KLYA expand.

There are 22 (TWTA, KLYA) power amplifiers suitable for the A standard station. Their HPA rating is generally 3kW, 1kW; TWTA is 100W to 700W.
