The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Repeater
Feb 07, 2018

The advantages and disadvantages of the repeater

The communication distance is enlarged.

The maximum number of nodes is increased.

Different network segments can use different communication rates.

The reliability is improved. When a network fails, it usually affects only a few network segments.

The performance is improved.

The main advantages of the repeater are simple installation, convenient use and relatively low price. He not only plays the role of network distance, but also connects the networks of different transmission media. The repeater works in the physical layer and is completely transparent to the high-level protocol. [2]

Because the repeater regenerates (restores) the state of the transmitted signal to the transmitted signal, and forward it, increasing the delay.

The MAC sublayer of the CAN bus does not have a flow control function. When the load on the network is very heavy, it may be caused by the lack of storage space in the buffer, resulting in the phenomenon of frame loss.

If the repeater fails, it will affect the work of the adjacent two subnets.
